![]() ![]() Tilda Swinton stars as the mother of Kevin, struggling to come to terms with her son and the horrors he has committed. A long process of development and financing began in 2005, with filming commencing in April 2010. The screenplay, written by Ramsay and Rory Stewart Kinnear, was based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Lionel Shriver. Specifically, the sentence was,Ī British-American psychological thriller drama film directed by Lynne Ramsay. She projects an image of intellectualism that the content of her words doesn't justify.much like her main character, who- despite being characterized as passionate about traveling -refers to Africa as a monolith rather than an assortment of different countries and says, in probably the least-offensive quote of interest that I could pull, "A variety of Italian and Indian restaurants were a good value, but authentic African eateries served mostly unseasoned goat." Shriver writes from the perspective of a woman of Armenian descent who, after bringing up the Armenian g*nocide during an argument, later reflects that she "exaggerated the ethnic chip on shoulder for effect". Having read some articles she's written, I'm now secure that I'm not being too reactive when Shriver writes as herself, she says a lot of things that Eva would say, and she's evidently just as comfortable forming staunchly uncompassionate opinions about minority groups of which she is not a part (She has made racist statements about immigration, defended transphobia, suggested that homophobia just isn't a societal problem anymore because gay marriage is legal now, and suggested that gender identity is the new hotness because the world has become so accepting that there's nowhere else for the youth to rebel to). It was complex in an interesting way, that was engaging to read, and not in a throwing-crap-at-the-wall way. Not less offensively the protagonist says some pretty wild things about child abuse. I was already off-put by their other behavior, which was conveyed better. You didn't need their bigotry to accomplish any of that. Everyone you write is horrendous, except the ones with no opinions at all. Maybe you were even going for a Brechtian break in the immersion, and I'm not supposed to get attached to anyone. ![]() Kevin says racist things and calls his mom out when she's out of line (Crucially, he calls her "harsh" he doesn't say that she's wrong.) his mom says racist things but calls it out when her son is out of line (Similar deal with her she doesn't say he's wrong.) fine, we have complexity. ![]() Sure, all the characters are racist and all the characters are hypocrites that's fine I guess.
